On the front lines of need.
On the front lines of need.
Working the Lobby I do see and talk with everyone that comes on to the Housing Choice Voucher Program (our Section 8 program) at one time or another. I have daily conversations with these people and a great deal of them tell me how tough it is for them to make it day by day. I’ve seen quite a few homeless individuals and families that were either sleeping on someone’s floor until help was available, or worse, sleeping in their cars.
Providing these people with the help and support they desperately need is an incredibly satisfying job. Everyone has a story that breaks your heart. Recently we were able to help a young couple with two children. Until they received a voucher from NRHA, they were homeless and relying on the goodness of others for survival. They were so relieved and grateful and said it couldn’t have come at a better time. Without the assistance, they did not know where they were going to be living the very next day.
Another client, an elderly couple, was struggling day to day. They were falling behind on their bills and wondering if they would be able to afford groceries. They also said the voucher couldn’t have come at a better time. They were so grateful that there was a program that could help them and relieve some of the pressure of how to come up with rent.
Seeing people that need the assistance finally get a place gives me a good feeling that I am doing something very worthwhile. It makes me happy, to be a part of making the difference for them. It’s one of the things that makes me love this job!
