We get teased out here in Nevada with lovely, warm spring weather only to be slapped in the face with snow and cold temperatures amidst blooming tulips. As snow is predicted in Reno and Carson City this evening – May 10 – it reminds me of another time and place and climate. The Buffalo, New York of my youth.

During our annual Board retreat in Genoa, Nevada this year we did something different. Board and staff participated in a communication exercise involving a monster, lots of whispering and a certain amount of fast walking.

The Set Up: Thirty-five participants were divided into six teams, each comprised of one LOOKER, one DRAWER, and four TRANSLATORS.

The DRAWER is at one end of the room with paper and markers, and never gets to see the picture.

The LOOKER is able to see the picture, but never speaks to the DRAWER.

I am blessed to have had two very special people in my life–my grandparents Luis and Beatriz. They both left this earth about eight years ago and it took me a long time to get over their passing. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about what special people they were and how they enriched my life.
